Katherine Sanders, O.D.
A native of Kansas, Dr. Sanders moved to the Gulf Coast with her husband in 2006 and became the first optometrist to join the The Center for Eye Care team. She practices full scope optometry which includes performing routine, pediatric and contact lens eye examinations, managing and treating conditions that affect the eye (like diabetes and glaucoma) and performing minor noninvasive surgical procedures. Dr. Sanders has extensive training and experience fitting contact lenses needed for patients that require specialty care. She also fits soft contact lenses for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism as well as bi-focal contact lenses. Dr. Sanders co-manages cataract surgery and Lasik surgery patients with Dr. Thurber.
Dr. Sanders began her college career at the University of Kansas where she discovered her passion for optometry. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology in 1999 after which she spent the next four years studying to earn her Doctorate of Optometry at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Sanders had a unique opportunity to complete a pediatric externship at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, earning her the respect of fellow colleagues while gaining extensive experience in pediatric eye care. Dr. Sanders practiced in Memphis, Tennessee and north Mississippi prior to moving to the coast.
Dr. Sanders is a participating optometrist of InfantSEE, a no-cost public health program developed to provide professional eye care for infants nationwide. She is a supporter of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Junior Auxiliary providing eye care to school-aged students in need and volunteers her time to perform vision screenings among elementary schools in the area. Dr. Sanders is an active member in the choir of First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport, where she and her family currently reside.
